Government Degree College, Baluwakot was etablished in 1996 by Government of Uttar Pradesh. The college started with a vision to impart higher education to the youths of Dharchula and its surrounding regions. The college is the remotest centre of higher education in Kumaun region. It is situated in the valley of Baluwakot on the banks of river Kali nearby the Indo-Nepal border. The greenery and hilly landscape along with the rippling sound of the river give a wonderful view to the college.  
    The college is affiliated to Kumaun Univeristy, Nainital. It is recognised by University Grants Commission under section 2 (F) and 12 (B) of the UGC Act of 1956.  The college receives fund from state government, UGC and other central government funding agencies for the development of education and research. At present there are 600+ students enrolled in the college. Three students of this college are pursuing research in Military Science.  The members of all the faculties are highly qualified.

              The college has produced various politicians, administrative officers, sportsperson, persons of Indian armed forces, and professionals among others. The college has an active students’ union that functions for the betterment of the college and the students.The college is determined to prepare its students as modern, scientific, progressive and democratic citizens of the nation. The college is continuously striving to inculcate discipline and moral values among students through NSS, Rovers/Rangers. Various cultural and extra-curricular activities are organised by the college occasionally to promote the values of national integration, communal harmony and social equality.
