CODE OF CONDUCT FOR HOD ( HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT)

The Heads of Departments (HODs) play a pivotal role in leading, managing, and developing their respective departments. Their leadership is crucial in ensuring the successful delivery of academic programs and fostering an environment that supports both faculty and student growth. The following are the key responsibilities and objectives for HODs:

  1. Leadership and Department Development
HODs should actively lead and manage their departments, ensuring continuous growth and improvement in academic standards, research activities, and faculty development.
  2. Academic Planning and Monitoring
The department head is responsible for preparing a detailed academic plan for each semester or academic year. This plan should outline course objectives, timelines, and key milestones. It is essential for monitoring the effective implementation of the plan throughout the academic period.
  3. Timetable and Workload Management
HODs should develop a well-structured timetable that ensures the efficient distribution of workload among faculty members. This will ensure the achievement of desired teaching outcomes and proper coverage of all course content.
  4. Ensuring Timely Class Schedules
It is the responsibility of the department head to ensure that classes are held as per the approved timetable, maintaining regularity and consistency in academic delivery.
  5. Student Welfare and Educational Progress
HODs must ensure the academic progress and welfare of students within their department. This includes overseeing their performance, offering guidance, and addressing any academic concerns promptly.
  6. Curriculum Development and Delivery
HODs should actively collaborate with faculty members in the process of curriculum development and delivery, ensuring that the curriculum is relevant, up-to-date, and effectively meets the educational needs of students.
  7. Monitoring Student Attendance
supervising the attendance of students in both theory and practical classes is a key responsibility of the department head. Ensuring regular attendance is crucial for student success and academic integrity.
  8. Holistic Student Development
HODs should focus on the overall development of students by organizing events that promote social responsibility, personality development, and healthy competition. Activities such as workshops, community service, and student competitions should be encouraged to enhance student growth beyond academics.
  9. Faculty Meetings and Planning
Regular faculty meetings should be held to plan, review, and discuss department activities. These meetings offer an opportunity to evaluate teaching methods, share insights, and ensure that department goals are being met.
  10. Guest Lectures, Industrial Visits, and Webinars
To broaden students’ knowledge and provide practical exposure, HODs should arrange guest lectures, industrial visits, and webinars. These events are designed to enrich students’ understanding and connect academic learning with real-world applications.
  11. Addressing Student Grievances
HODs should be attentive to the grievances and concerns of students and work to resolve them using ethical academic practices. Maintaining an open-door policy for student concerns fosters trust and a positive learning environment.
  12. Department and Laboratory Maintenance
Ensuring the proper maintenance of department facilities and laboratories is essential. HODs should monitor the condition of resources and ensure they are in optimal working order to support teaching and learning.
  13. Supporting Both Slow and Fast Learners
Department heads should make provisions for the development of both slow and fast learners. This involves identifying their needs, providing additional support for slower learners, and offering advanced resources or challenges for fast learners to foster a well-rounded academic experience for all students.
